About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover photograph (Copyright © 2007, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved.): A mixture of wild-type and pex1 mutant strains of the basidiomycete yeast Cryptococcus neoformans, showing a fluorescent protein with punctate localization to the peroxisomes of wild-type cells or mislocalized to the cytoplasm in the pex1 mutant. The cell wall fluoresces blue (calcofluor white stain) and the DsRED-SKL protein fluoresces yellow-orange. C. neoformans produces peroxisomes in rich media, such as yeast extract-peptone-dextrose in which these strains were grown. Mutations of some peroxin genes, like PEX1, result in strains with reduced growth on monosaccharide carbon sources, suggesting an interaction between peroxisome function and glucose homeostasis in this fungus.
