Cover photograph (Copyright © 2006, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved.): In the plasma membrane of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, two separated, stable, and immobile lateral subcompartments exist; one compartment is occupied by the H+-ATPase Pma1p (red), and the second compartment is occupied by a number of H+ symport proteins (e.g., Can1p and Fur4p) and Sur7p (green), a protein of unknown function. It has now been shown that a heterologously expressed plant H+ glucose symporter (HUP1 from Chlorella kessleri) is sorted in the yeast membrane to localize to the same compartment as Sur7p. The image shows a processed three-dimensional reconstruction of a stack of confocal sections. The subcompartments are visualized using fluorescent proteins. (See related article on page 945.)
