Cover photograph (Copyright © 2005, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved.): Scanning electron micrograph of a Candida albicans biofilm showing a water channel. The biofilm was formed on the surface of a longitudinal tooth section. Cells were grown for 24 h under 5% CO2, 37°C, and shaking in a defined mammalian cell medium (F-12). At this stage, the majority of the cells are in the hyphal form. The biofilm was examined with an ISI AβT SX-40A microscope. Magnification, ×1,000. (See related article on page 1562.)
