Cover photograph (Copyright © 2005, American Society for Microbiology. Residual centrin (red) accumulates at the basal bodies. Centrin deficiency impairs the ability of the cells to maintain a pair of basal bodies. Note cells with zero, one, two, and three basal bodies. Furthermore, the centrin knockdown greatly disturbs the ability of the cells to organize a system of four basal body-associated striated fiber assemblin fibers typical for wild-type cells.
