The fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans regulates its polysaccharide capsule depending on environmental stimuli. To investigate whether capsule polymers change under different growth conditions, we analyzed shed capsule at physiological concentrations without physical perturbation. Our results indicate that regulation of capsule size is mediated at the level of individual polysaccharide molecules.
